How the result is built
Poker Hands Ranked from Strongest to Weakest
Start with the hand type. When two hands have the same type, compare the relevant card ranks from highest priority to lowest.

Royal flush
Ten through ace in one suit; the highest possible poker hand.

Straight flush
Five consecutive cards in one suit; the highest sequence wins.

Four of a kind
Four cards of one rank plus a fifth-card kicker.

Full house
Three cards of one rank plus a pair of another rank.

Flush
Five cards in one suit, compared from the highest card down.

Straight
Five consecutive ranks; suits do not matter.

Three cards of one rank plus two kickers.

Compare category before kickers
A higher category always beats a lower one. Only equal categories proceed to their rank sequence: pair first for one pair, both pairs before the kicker for two pair, and effective high card for a straight.
The board may supply most or all cards
Players are not required to use a hole card. The strongest five-card subset among seven available cards plays, even when all five come from the board.
Suits do not break Hold’em ties
Clubs, diamonds, hearts, and spades have equal comparison value. Exact five-card scores split the pot.

Ace-five-four-three-two is a five-high straight, with ace acting below two.

When seven cards can form multiple full houses, compare the trip rank first, then the paired rank.
Frequently asked questions
What is the strongest standard hand?
A royal flush—ten, jack, queen, king, and ace in one suit—is the highest possible hand.
Does three pair count?
No. Choose the two highest pairs and the best remaining kicker.
Can an ace be low?
Only in A-2-3-4-5 for standard rules.
Does a sixth card ever matter?
No once the best five scores are equal.
